Regional Family Leadership and Support Initiative

”Children do better when their families are strong and families do better when they live in communities that help them succeed."

The mission of the Regional Family Leadership Initiative is the active engagement of parents and caregivers in all aspects of promoting their child’s optimal social and emotional development and overall mental health. A key component is to provide families with easy access to needed information, resources and supports.

The Regional Family Leadership and Support Initiative is a result of the implementation efforts of the Illinois Children’s Mental Health Partnership (ICMHP) Strategic Plan. ICMHP has provided funding to 4 regional grant sites. Each site has hired a Regional Family Leadership Coordinator. This project is overseen by the Statewide Family Leadership Coordinator.

The goals of the Initiative are to:

  1. Develop parent led regional family, school and community coalitions
  2. Offer educational and training opportunities to families in order to become effective advocates for their child at a local, community, regional and/or state level
  3. Create support and mentoring networks for families
  4. Assist in the coordination of regional, community and local resources

Kim Miller is currently the Statewide Family Leadership Coordinator for the Illinois Children’s Mental Health Partnership (ICMHP). In this role, she currently oversees the development of the Regional Family Leadership Initiative in 4 of the 5 Division of Mental Health (DMH) regions of the state. The mission of the Regional Family Leadership Initiative is the active engagement of parents and caregivers in all aspects of promoting their child’s optimal social and emotional development and overall mental health. However, Kim sees her most important role as the parent of a 19 year old daughter who struggles on a daily basis with mental health issues. It is her passion to empower parents with information, education and support. It is her hope that parents and children do not have to endure the struggles and frustrations that they encountered when trying to maneuver the mental health system.
